Middle School wins volleyball title
Sunnyvale Swim Club hosts competition--in Pacifica
By Dick Sparrer
For many members of the Cupertino Middle School seventh grade girls volleyball team, the 2000 season marked their first year of competitive volleyball.
But the Cupertino girls didn't let a little think like inexperience stand in their way. They simply went out and won themselves a league championship.
Cupertino backed up a 9-1 regular season with a couple of playoff victories to take the championship in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
Cupertino turned back Miller in the league semifinals, then handled Blach 15-5, 15-1, 15-7 in the finals to clinch the league championship.
"It was a total team effort," said Cupertino coach Lillian Hom, in her second season as the girls seventh grade coach at the school. "We generated a lot of offense and were tough on defense."
Members of the championship team, many of whom are Sunnyvale residents, included Robin Bailey, Julie Nakamoto, Christina Fukumoto, Erica Harris, Shannon McFadzean, Madeleine Baldwin, Janice Tram, Margaret Menasce, Amber Fabella, Abi Keck, Jessica Cha and Helen Ashton.
Hom was the squad's head coach and Annette Cardosi was her assistant. Both are residents of Sunnyvale.
Sunnyvale hosts meet
There was no facility in Sunnyvale large enough to host the Northern California Age Group Swimming Championships, but that didn't stop the Sunnyvale Swim Club.
Parents, coaches and swimmers of the club hosted the event anyway, using a pool in Pacifica that could accommodate the 120 teams and 643 swimmers from as far south as San Benito to as far north as the Oregon border.
Sunnyvale swimmers who qualified for the meet included Michael Wang, Larry Wen, Karta Khalsa, Peter Lo, Andrew Sun, Viktor Sinzig, Jeffrey Meadows, Jackson Miller, Morgan Lee, Megan Fischer-Colbri, Katie Sun, Lauren Carter, Jenna Gunderson, Jessica Howard-Anderson and Nicole Ley.
Meet directors were Nellie Zhu and Mary Granvold and Susan Carter served as the hospitality coordinator.
