Deadline nears for HS transfer forms
Parents or guardians who want their children to attend a high school outside the boundaries of their home school must turn in an application by March 31.
Before requesting a transfer, students must register at their assigned high school. Parents may then submit a transfer request to the principal of that school. Intradistrict transfer forms are available at each high school.
Homestead and Monta Vista high schools will not be accepting transfers to their campuses because they are expected to meet or exceed their capacity for students for the 1997-1998 school year.
If the number of requests for any school exceeds the amount of space available, slots will be filled by lottery. Parents will be notified whether their child has been admitted to the school of their choice on or before June 1.
For more information about intradistrict transfers, call 522-2232.
Mayor wants fair at State of City event
Mayor Stan Kawczynski has proposed that this year's State of the City event be held with a fair to encourage people to volunteer their services.
Volunteers can sign up at City Hall beginning at 9 a.m. on May 31 to volunteer for activities that day or for later projects, officials said.
The mayor's address will take place at the Civic Center at 11 a.m.
Activities could involve cleaning a park, painting or making repairs in schools, cleaning downtown streets and fixing facilities used by youths, officials said.
An award ceremony also will be held to recognize citizens for community service and city employees for outstanding service.
Amdahl gets waste-reduction award
The California Integrated Waste Management Board on Jan. 28 recognized Amdahl Corp. as one of the ten top recycling companies and small businesses in California in 1996.
At a Jan. 29 ceremony at a company office at 1240 East Arques Ave., Waste Board Chairman Daniel G. Pennington presented a "Waste Reduction Award Program" plaque to Amdahl officials.
Amdahl designs and markets mainframe computer hardware and software. Last year, the company recycled 5,241 cubic feet of metal, wood, plastics, packaging foam, mixed papers and cardboard.
It also diverted from the landfill nearly 5,000 pounds in aluminum cans and glass bottles.
Combined with existing recycling efforts, Amdahl's new programs have exceeded the state goal of sending 50 percent less trash to landfills in the year 2000, officials said.
