Paternoster is new director of community development
Résumé includes extensive list of duties in city of Long Beach
By Daniel Hindin
After a six month nationwide search, Sunnyvale City Manager Robert LaSala announced the appointment of Robert Paternoster as the new director of community development for the city of Sunnyvale. Paternoster will take over for Marvin Rose on March 5.
The community development department's responsibilities include planning, building, neighborhood preservation and code enforcement, housing and economic development. Paternoster will direct a staff of 43 with a total budget of approximately $5 million.
No stranger to large projects with large budgets, for the past six years Paternoster managed all aspects of the 300-acre, $350 million Queensway Bay project aimed at renewing and revitalizing downtown Long Beach. Prior to heading that project, Paternoster served as the director of planning and building for the city of Long Beach for 17 years, where he oversaw a staff of 100 and a budget of approximately $7 million.
"Sunnyvale is entirely different from Long Beach," Paternoster says. "Sunnyvale is benefiting from extensive growth, but it is also experiencing growing pains in areas such as the housing market, traffic and business; and the downtown project needs to come together."
LaSala wholeheartedly supports Paternoster. "Bob has a track record of successfully managing large and complex projects," he says, "as well as engaging diverse community interests in all aspects of planning, redevelopment, economic development, neighborhood revitalization, code enforcement and strategic planning. ."
"For the last six years I've been running a one-man show," Paternoster explains. "I'm looking forward to working with a team again."
"We hired a professional search firm to help us fill the position," says Sunnyvale's Assistant to the City Manager Dan Rich. "Each of the five finalists went through a series of interviews with three different panels. They also met with a group of department directors and went through a management style assessment."
After the rigorous interview process, the city decided Paternoster was the best candidate.
LaSala also expressed his thanks to Rose for filling the vacant position during the search process. Rose will resume his duties as Public Works Director upon Paternoster's arrival.
