Tree-Huggers Unite
Vargas Elementary School students will plant a tree, hug a tree, sing tree songs, create displays and give tours of the school's Resource Garden in honor of Arbor Day on March 7.
All classes at Vargas will participate in the festivities. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m., with the kindergarten class giving a hug to the tree planted two years ago. The first- and second-grade classes will sing the tree song, the third-grade classes will read the tree poem and the fourth- and fifth-graders will set up tree displays.
The Resource Garden Club will plant the tree with assistance from the Sunnyvale Street Tree Arborist.
Visitors will then get a chance to tour the school's garden area to see wildflowers, a miniature fruit tree orchard, bulbs in bloom, butterflies, vegetables and herbs.
Staff members of the Sunnyvale Street Tree Department will man an information booth to answer tree questions. They work with 36,000 trees in the Sunnyvale Community Forest each day. Vargas is located at 1054 Carson Drive. The event is free. Call 522-8267 for more information.
