Photo: Fallen Tree
A gigantic, centuries-old tree broke off at the roots and collapsed onto a nearby historic balustrade on the De Anza College campus. The tree also slightly damaged the pavilion-style mansion that houses the California History Center. According to the center's director, Tom Izu, the tree suffered from a fungus that attacked the root structure over time. Eventually, with the recent rainy weather adding extra weight to the tree's branches, the trunk just snapped. The fall occurred sometime over the weekend of Feb. 23 to 25 when the campus was deserted. The work crews have already cleared the tree, but the school will send portions of it to the creative arts department, and also give cross-sections to the History Center and the environmental studies department, says Donna Jones-Dulin of college services.
