    Teacher job fair coming March 10

    In the face of a critical shortage of teachers in Santa Clara County (and nationwide), more than 30 local school districts invite qualified teachers to attend the county's 14th annual Teacher Recruitment Fair on March 10, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the County Office of Education. The office is located at 1290 Ridder Park Drive off Brokaw Road in San Jose.

    Virtually all of the county's elementary, high school and unified school districts will be recruiting K-12 teachers (single and multiple subjects), reading and other specialists and teachers for special education, alternative school and Head Start programs.

    Applicants should bring multiple copies of their résumés and transcripts, as well as their credential documents. Information will be provided on the credentialing process, the California Basic Educational Skills Test and substitute teaching.

    By attending the March 10 fair, qualified applicants will have a rare opportunity to talk with representatives of virtually all local school districts in one place. For additional information, call the sponsoring County Office of Education's Fair Hotline at 408.453.6840.

    Sunnyvale adjusts for power crunch

    California's ongoing energy crisis is being felt by the city of Sunnyvale's outdoor recreation facilities. The city's standard practices have to be adjusted to reflect the power shortage. Until further notice, the following changes will be in place--effective immediately:

    * Timers on night lights for neighborhood park tennis courts, basketball courts and volleyball courts will be set to restrict play during hours of peak electrical demand, allowing play after 7 p.m. during non-peak demand;

    *Tennis players at the Las Palmas Tennis Center will not be given the option of other courts to play on if there is an empty, lit court available (the center's lights are wired to turn on and off in sets of two, not individually);

    * The implementation of rolling blackouts during the day will not result (as previously communicated) in automatic closure of either the Las Palmas Tennis Center or the Sunken Gardens Driving Range at night. During periods of rolling blackouts, the driving range and tennis center will close during peak demand hours only and reopen after 7 p.m. during non-peak hours;

    * Permits for organized sports activities requiring night lights (such as little league, youth soccer, adult softball leagues) will be honored due to the lengthy and complex planning efforts undertaken by user groups to schedule play and the fact that the vast majority of said usage is during hours of non-peak demand.

    The California Air Resources Board has defined 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. as hours of "peak demand."

    16th Hands on the Arts coming to Sunnyvale in May

    The 16th Annual Hands on the Arts, sponsored by Sunnyvale Leisure Services in collaboration with the Arts Council Silicon Valley, is coming to the Sunnyvale Community Center on May 19.

    Hands on the Arts is a hands-on, multi-cultural arts festival for children ages 5 to 12. Each year, over 50 performing and visual artists participate. Professional visual artists design "make-it/take-it" crafts for children to complete and take home with them, and performing artists design workshops involving music, dance or acting. This fun-filled event is topped off by great food.

    Applications are being accepted for artists who would like to share their talent by hosting workshops. A $200 stipend will be paid to each participating artist. For more information, or to request an application, please contact Diane Moglen at 408.730.7343 for performing artists or Kristin Dance at 408.730.7748 for visual artists. The deadline is March 9.
