Duran, Harvey outduel Amiwero

By DICK SPARRER

Ben Amiwero pitched well.

But Nick Duran and Lamar Harvey were better--at least enough to help Fremont open the league season with a 2-0 victory over Homestead last week.

Duran and Harvey combined on a 6-hit shutout to help the Firebirds start the year off right in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

Duran started for Fremont and picked up his first win of the season. Harvey came on late in the game to clinch his third save.

Fremont scored single runs in the first and second, and that turned out to be all Duran and Harvey needed to clinch the win.

Amiwero was a tough-luck loser in the game for Homestead. Fremont had just five hits in the game, but the Mustangs committed four errors in the loss.

Steve Meyers ripped a pair of hits, and Steve Goldberg doubled to lead Homestead's 6-hit attack in the game.

Fremont's league record fell even at 1-1 a couple of days later when the Firebirds dropped a tough 12-2 decision to Wilcox. Duran and Darren Lang had two hits apiece in the loss for the 'Birds.

Fremont slipped to 3-4 for the year last weekend after losing 8-2 to Leigh in the consolation finals of the Pirate Classic Tournament.

Art Alegria blasted a two-run home run in the sixth inning to account for all of the Fremont scoring in the game. Harvey ripped a double for one of only two other hits the Firebirds could manage in the game.

Fremont opened the year with a 1-1 split in its first two games in the Pirate Classic.

Harvey singled and tripled to drive in four runs to lead the Firebirds to a tight 10-9 win over Mountain View in their season opener. Luke Donigan had two hits to drive in a pair of runs and Bryan McCann slapped a double.

Joey Ajlouny was the winning pitcher for Fremont and Harvey came on to pick up the save.
