Noll bows out of election for City Council

Re-election for Parker ruled out by term limits

By LESTER CHANG

Sunnyvale City Councilman Landon Noll announced at a council meeting on March 4 that he would not run for reelection in November.

Noll told The Sun after the meeting that he enjoyed serving the public and that he may run again in the future.

At the meeting, he said he would leave his post at the end of his term in November for "personal and professional reasons."

His seat and one held by Councilwoman Robin Parker on the seven-member council will be up for grabs in the Nov. 4 election.

Parker will finish serving two consecutive four-year terms in November and will not be eligible to run for re-election because of term limits.

Vice Mayor Jim Roberts, whose term also expires in November, said he will run for reelection.

The filing period for candidates is in July.

Noll's last day on the council will be Nov. 18, when the members will be sworn in.

Noll is an Internet architect for Silicon Graphics in Mountain View. He said he wants to devote more time to policy issues related to information technology and networks.

"I have found the recent explosion in the use of and potential of the Internet presents me with a unique opportunity to shape public policy in critical areas of online security, privacy and free speech," he said in a prepared text to the council.

He said Internet technology is constantly changing and that he wants to shape the foundation of its future development.

He served as a chairman of the council's subcommittee on technology.

The monthly base salary of a Sunnyvale City Council member is $1,078.
