      Ross, Douglas flying

And they fly to league titles

Roy Ross and Dan Douglas were flying.

And because of it, they helped the Fremont track team soar to a team third at the league meet in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League last week.

Ross was flying over hurdles and Douglas was flying through the air in the triple jump and long jump to lead the Fremont effort at the league meet.

The two, along with teammate Brian Cooper, placed high enough to lead the Firebirds to a team third behind Wilcox and Homestead.

The Chargers won the team title at the meet with 141 points, and the Mustangs were second at 100. Fremont finished third with 65 points, and Santa Clara and Lynbrook ended a distant fourth, tied with 48 points.

Ross was a double winner for the Firebirds, and Douglas came through with a first and a second to lead the Fremont showing at the meet.

Ross cruised to an individual league title in the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.96, and he came back with another crown in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 41.78.

Douglas joined Ross as a league champ with an outstanding effort in his specialty, the triple jump. Douglas soared 44-3 1/4 to win the event, finishing three and a half feet ahead of his nearest rival. Douglas was also second in the long jump at 20-7 1/4.

Cooper supported the two Fremont winners with a second in the 1600 meters. Cooper covered the four laps in 4:41.1.

Fremont and Homestead finished two-three in the 1600-meter relay. The Firebirds were second in 3:38.3, with the Mustangs third in 3:41.2.

But it was Homestead second and Fremont third in the team standings.

Dante Mack and Brian Morgan starred for Homestead in the meet. Mack was second in the 100 in 11.27, third in the 200 in 23.47 and third in the long jump at 20-5 3/4, and Morgan was second in the 300 intermediate hurdles in 16.22, second in the 110 high hurdles in 16.22 and third in the 400 in 53.93.

Mike Wolman raced to a second in the 3200 meters in 10:02.3, and Matt Hovik was third in the 1600 in 4:41.6.

Fremont's Amy Andrzejewski and Heidi Gott each placed at the league meet. Andrzejewski was third in the triple jump at 31-9, and Gott was third in the 300 hurdles in 52.83.
