Firebirds, Mustangs in action

The Fremont and Homestead football teams will go at it this week, but not for real.

The two squads will take the field for the first time this season when they participate in scrimmages against powerhouse teams from neighboring leagues.

The Firebirds will be the first team in action when they host Del Mar in a Sept. 4 double-header at Diesner Field.

The Fremont and Del Mar frosh-soph teams will meet at 4 p.m., with the varsity teams set to take the field at 6 p.m.

A night later, Homestead takes over Diesner to host Mitty in a couple of scrimmages. The Mustangs and Monarchs will square off in a frosh-soph scrimmage at 5 p.m., and the varsity teams will take the field at 7 p.m.

It will be the community's first opportunity this season to see the Firebirds and Mustangs in action.

The clubs will play their regular season openers a week later. Fremont hosts Cupertino on Sept. 12, 7:30 p.m. (frosh-soph kickoff at 5:15 p.m.), and Homestead entertains Aragon on Sept. 13, 7:30 p.m., at Diesner Field.
