Police arrest a suspect in bank robbery in Sunnyvale

Suspect allegedly left practice note on front seat of his car

    By Daniel Hindin

The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety arrested 43-year-old Sunnyvale resident Cary Jones on suspicion of two counts of bank robbery and one count of parole violation on Nov. 14.

According to Capt. Chuck Eaneff, while searching the downtown area, Officer Bill Honsal noticed Jones closely matched the description of the person who robbed the Bank of America at 444 S. Mathilda Avenue at 5:25 p.m. on Nov. 14.

According to authorities, the person who robbed the bank walked into the bank and handed a note to the bank teller, demanding money. The teller gave the robber an undisclosed amount of money and allowed him to walk out before calling the police. Police say the suspect never showed a weapon.

Police say they combed the downtown area and found Jones three blocks from the scene. As police searched the area for the suspect, Sunnyvale Investigations looked for suspicious vehicles and possible incriminating evidence. peered through the window of one car, officers found a practice note on the front seat of the vehicle. Eaneff says the car turned out to belong to Jones.

"This was a really good piece of police work," Eaneff says. "You have to know your beats; you have to know your neighborhoods."

Bank witnesses taken to the scene of the arrest identified Jones as the robber, Eaneff says. Police recovered almost all of the missing money.

According to Eaneff, Jones is also suspected in the Nov. 13 robbery of the Wells Fargo Bank two blocks away at 295 S. Mathilda Avenue. During that robbery, the suspect told the teller that he had a gun, but never showed it.

Although he says he can't discuss specifics, Eaneff reports Jones has a prior criminal record.
