Happy New Year: Now quit smoking
The Sunnyvale City Council Nov. 25 amended the city's no-smoking ordinance to prohibit lighting up in bars. This brings Sunnyvale's ordinance into compliance with the state law that takes effect Jan. 1.
The state law banning smoking was originally enacted two years ago, but its effective date was extended twice by the Legislature.
The Sunnyvale ordinance already requires no-smoking areas to be provided in public places such as restaurants and restricts smoking in workplaces.
Labor recognizes Youth@Work site
Sunnyvale's online youth employment service, Youth@Work, will receive a national award for innovation next month from the Joint Employment and Training Technology Conference, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor. The Web site is maintained by the NOVA Private Industry Council.
The service centralizes job listings into a comprehensive database on a Web site.
NOVA is administered by Sunnyvale's Department of Employment Development on behalf of six Silicon Valley cities.
Youth@Work's address on the Internet is http://www.youthatwork.org.
