City to close off Crawford Road
At last week's council meeting, it was determined that Crawford Road should be closed temporarily at Sunnyvale-Saratoga Road.
Neighbors on the street filed a petition with the city and held meetings about the road closure. Citing safety concerns, as well as a paragraph in the neighborhood charter that was written nine years ago, neighbors debated whether the closure was a convenience issue as opposed to a genuine safety concern.
The neighborhood charter requires that each household contribute $5,000 to eventually having the street sealed off. Those living on Crawford each paid the money when buying their homes and now want the city to live up to its end of the deal.
After hearing more than an hour of public testimony, the council recognized neighbors' safety concerns by approving a temporary closure that would allow access to emergency vehicles. The city and neighbors will continue to monitor the traffic situation and will eventually make a final recommendation.
According to city traffic engineer Ray Williamson, plans will be set over the next two weeks as to how to go about closing the road, when it will be done and for how long.
Stocklmeir builds memorial
Stocklmeir Elementary School held a memorial service Dec. 12 for Bob Collings, the students' favorite crossing guard. The children, teachers and community raised more than $500 for a memorial garden of trees surrounded by benches in Collings's honor on the school grounds.
Collings, who was 70 when he died, was paralyzed from the shoulders down last May after being hit by a car. Collings received three large boxes of cards from the children alone, said his wife, Evelyn. Collings died of a heart attack Aug. 17.
