Firebirds gunning for another soccer crown
By Dick Sparrer
A year ago, the Fremont boys soccer team won the championship in the rugged De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
And head coach Jon Herzenberg is hoping for more of the same this winter.
Eight players return from that title team of a season ago, and they'll join with a crop of newcomers to form what Herzenberg thinks is another winner at Fremont.
"Young players with major contributions will complement seasoned seniors to form an overall solid starting 11 that will be hard to beat," said Herzenberg, who looks for a first- or second-place finish in the division this year.
Senior forward Gabriel Sanchez and senior defenders Mike Parenteau, Felix Tabarez and Victor Guiterrez are all-league returners for the Firebirds along with junior defenders Jorge Salinas and Miguel Valdivias.
Seniors David Chavez and Jose Vasquez are also returners from last year's championship squad.
Sophomore goalkeeper Greg Larson joins with soph midfielder Ryan Starnes, soph forward Miguel Sanchez and freshman forward Jin Suwa to give Fremont a solid corps of newcomers this year.
But Fremont is off to a rocky start in league. The Firebirds lost to Palo Alto last week before tying Los Gatos 1-1 on a penalty kick by Ariel Garcia.
