Dons win conference crown, fall in playoffs
By Dick Sparrer
It's getting to be somewhat commonplace when the De Anza College men's soccer team wins a conference championship. After all, the Dons have won 17 championships in the 33-year history of the men's soccer program at the school.

Still, just because the Dons have done it before, it doesn't mean that it doesn't feel good to do it again!

De Anza did it again this fall, taking the Coast Conference championship thanks to the likes of Miguel Villa, Anthony Wood, Emmanuel Mendoza and the rest of the 2003 Dons.

By winning the conference crown, the Dons qualified for the Northern California playoffs. De Anza opened the post-season with a 2-1 win over Evergreen Valley College, but the Dons lost 3-2 to Hartnell on Nov. 22 to face elimination from the NorCal tourney. De Anza ended the year with a solid 14-4-3 record.

Villa, Wood and Mendoza all won special conference honors in De Anza's championship season.

Villa was named the Player of the Year in the Coast Conference. Wood was tabbed the Defender of the Year and Mendoza took Goalkeeper of the Year honors. De Anza's Colin Lindores was selected as Coach of the Year in the conference.

Villa, Wood and Mendoza were joined on the all-conference first team by teammates Christian Vivanco, Cesar Serrano, Tom Czjakowski and Max Podlone. Claiming all-conference second team spots were David Tanton, Rudy Medina, Jose Colin and Scott Mayeda.
