Quock in PP&K action at Candlestick Park
By Dick Sparrer
It all started in San Jose, but for a pair of local young athletes the NFL Pepsi Punt, Pass & Kick competition didn't end until their names were emblazoned across the scoreboard at Candlestick Park during a San Francisco 49ers home football game.

Mitchell Ravizza of San Jose and Marissa Quock of Sunnyvale performed well enough in the PP&K competition to play their way to Candlestick.

Ravizza, competing in the boys 8/9-year-old division, won the 49er team finals at Kezar Stadium on Nov. 2, then won again during halftime of the 49ers-St. Louis Rams to rank among the best in the nation in his age group.

Quock finished second at Kezar in the girls 10/12-year-old age division.

Ravizza won titles in two qualifying events held in San Jose, then finished first in the sectionals held in Daly City. He went on to finish first at the San Francisco 49er team championships at Kezar Stadium in Daly City to win the trip to Candlestick.

The 9-year-old Rose Garden resident competed again at the 'Stick, and his halftime pass was long enough to win the division title. His name was announced as the winner at the game's 2-minute warning and was posted on the stadium scoreboard.

Ravizza is one of 32 NFL winners from stadiums across the country, and the top four point-getters in the nation will compete in the finals during the NFL playoffs.

"We now are waiting for the results across the country," said Heidi Ravizza, Mitchell's mother. "The top four children across the country compete at a playoff game in January."

Quock, a sixth grader at Cupertino Middle School, won the two San Jose qualifying events, then won in Daly City to earn her place in the field of competitors in the 49er team finals at Kezar.

The 4-foot-6, 65-pounder didn't have the size normally associated the sport of football, but she mustered all of her strength to finish second in the field of 20 competitors on a damp and chilly November morning in San Francisco. Athletes from as far away as Nevada and Utah were in the field.

Quock punted, passed and kicked her way to a personal best 187 points, second only to a girl from Utah.

Her second-place finish earned her a trip to Candlestick where her name was also announced and her name and picture appeared on the scoreboard.
