Hathaway Park to hold first association meeting Feb. 5
By Tiffany Carney
Originally safety concerns about Hathaway Park brought residents together in their West San Jose neighborhood. That same group soon formed a bond that spawned the Hathaway Park Neighborhood Association.
The first official meeting, scheduled for Feb. 5 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., will be held at the West Valley Branch Library, 1243 San Tomas Aquino Road.
Acting board members held five organizational meetings prior to the first meeting, but will vote on bylaws and discuss other preliminary issues Feb. 5.
The new neighborhood association, within the boundaries of Campbell Avenue, Saratoga Avenue, San Tomas Aquino Road and Hamilton Avenue, has been in the works since November.
The association is open to all residents, including those living in apartments.
"We did not want to exclude anyone," said Andrea Miller, acting vice president.
The association aims to secure a safe neighborhood though neighborhood watch programs, improve and maintain Hathaway Park, plant trees, host social events and more.
"I was the one that really got the ball rolling, but I wouldn't have done it if other neighbors had not expressed enthusiasm and support for it," Miller said.
From the first few conversations and brainstorming sessions, neighbors were excited about the new association.
"That is what really gave us the energy to go ahead with this," Miller said.
At the first meeting, residents can meet their neighbors and hear from speakers such as District 1 Councilman Pete Constant, representatives from the San Jose Police Department and more.
