Local host families are wanted for exchange students
World Heritage, a non-profit organization, is seeking host families for high school-aged students from the former Soviet Union for the 2000-01 school year. These students are scholarship winners of the Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) program, which is sponsored by Congress and administered by the United States Information Agency.
One of the goals of FLEX is to expose likely future leaders of the former Soviet Union to a free market economy by having students live with an American family and attend a local high school. For more information about hosting, contact Becky Parker at 1.800.888.9040 or visit www.world-heritage.org.

Advocates speak out for children's sake
According to Child Advocates of Santa Clara and San Mateo counties, there are more than 1 million victims of child abuse annually. In order to make a dent in that figure and to raise awareness locally, Child Advocates will sponsor a Light of Hope Candlelight Vigil in Plaza de Cesar Chavez Park on April 3 at 7 p.m. April is National Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month.
Child Advocates recruits and trains community volunteers to speak on behalf of abused or neglected children who are placed in the juvenile court system. Volunteers who want to be an advocate for a child are appointed by a judge. There are now 412 children waiting to be matched with an advocate.
Child Advocates provides scheduled orientations and training sessions throughout the year. For more information, call 408.436.6450.

Former candidate gives endorsement
November elections are still months away, but candidates are already gearing up. Former District 6 City Council candidate Mike Borquez has endorsed run-off candidate Ken Yeager.
A mortgage banker and longtime resident of Willow Glen, Borquez ran for council on a platform of calmer streets, the revitalization of West San Carlos Street and controlling traffic around Valley Fair mall. Yeager says he's looking forward to working with Borquez on those issues.
Yeager, a political science professor at San Jose State University, took the lead in the election by about 1,000 votes. He'll battle it out for Vice Mayor Frank Fiscalini's seat come November with neighborhood activist Kris Cunningham.
