New light poles put a shine on Willow Glen streets

Streetlights to be installed in first phase of project

Willow Glen residents will be seeing the light soon--and more of it now that a citywide street lighting improvement project is inching closer to implementation.

Street Lights Citywide 2000 Phase A includes improving, replacing and installing streetlights in 35 areas, including four in Willow Glen. Citywide 2000 is an effort by the city to eliminate a backlogged list of residents' requests for better lighting in their neighborhoods.

Construction for improvements on Willow Glen Way, Cross Way, Telfer Avenue and Broadway Avenue is expected to begin in May. Estimated completion time is around December.

Jim Foley, Public Works division manager for design and construction, said Willow Glen residents can expect to see some current lighting improvements and a few additional light poles on area streets.

Phase A of the project, with an estimated cost of $374,429, will help pay for three new lights on Willow Glen Way between Newport and Searles avenues. On Cross Way, nine improvements and installations will be made between Northern Road and Dawson Avenue. Seven of those lights will be added to PG&E poles.

Michelle McGurk, chief of staff for District 6 Vice Mayor Frank Fiscalini, said the light improvements are based on a citywide ranking. Street darkness, safety and crime are all components for reaching the top of the city's street improvements list. McGurk said streets targeted for upgrades also have priority because they've been on a long waiting list.

At its March 28 meeting, the San Jose City Council approved contractor Pacific Electric Co. to make the street light improvements. The project will have three phases. Streets slated for improvement during the second two phases of the project haven't been determined by staff at this point.
