It was the Central Coast Section (CCS) Top 8 meet, and the Presentation girls track team came through with a top eight performance.

The Panthers finished eighth in the girls division at the Top 8, thanks to a sensational performance by distance star Melissa Grelli.

The sophomore standout was a double winner in the 1,600-meter run and the 3,200 meters to spark the Panthers to the impressive finish in the meet that's considered among the best in the section.

"This is really a CCS preview meet," said meet director Willie Harmatz of Los Gatos. "It was a great meet, and we had a big crowd."

Grelli pleased the crowd with her efforts in the distance events. She was first in the 1,600 in 4:59.49 and she was tops in the 3,200 in 10:54.19.

Sophomore Mandy Williams was seventh in the 800 in 2:20.94 for the Panthers, and Christine Kim soared to an eighth in the triple jump at 33-3.75.

Los Gatos won the girls team title with 56 points overall. Monterey was second at 43, with Carlmont third at 32, Mt. Pleasant fourth at 30, San Benito fifth at 29, Lynbrook and Wilcox tied for sixth at 28 and Presentation eighth at 20.

Willow Glen sent freshman Christina Diaz into the Top 8 field, and she ended up running 11:28.80 to finish 10th in the 3,200 meters.

In boys competition, soph Ngoan Phan ended up 14th in the 3,200 meters in 10:03.90 for the Rams.

Willow Glen's Juan DeLara ended up seventh in the boys frosh-soph 1,600 in 4:41.56, and Gilbert Rosales was 12th in the 3,200 in 10:29.51.

Two weeks earlier, on the same track, Presentation's Williams and WG's Phan and Diaz performed well in the CCS Frosh-Soph Top 8 meet.

Williams raced to a second in the 800 meters in 2:23.8 to lead the Panthers' showing. Sierra Siemer was eighth in the 3,200 in 12:28.9.

Diaz ended up third in the 3,200 in 11:47.5, and she was fourth in the 1,600 in 5:23.4.

Kelsey Siebert supported Diaz's showing with a seventh in the 1,600 in 5:39.5 and a ninth in the 3,200 in 12:32.8. Angel Montelongo was seventh in the shot put at 27-4.5 for the Rams, and Mont Alvarado was 11th in the 3,200 in 10:12.3.

In boys action, Phan raced to a fourth in the 3,200 in 10:12.3, and DeLara was eighth in the 1,600 in 4:44.1.

    Dual meets

In dual meet track competition last week, Presentation romped past Del Mar 69-54 to improve to 4-2 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League (BVAL). Siemer ran to wins in the mile in 5:53 and the 2-mile in 12:46 to lead the Panthers to the team win.

Willow Glen swept past Santa Teresa in both the boys and girls divisions. The Rams are now 6-0 in boys action this spring in the West Valley Division of the BVAL, and the girls are 5-0.

Diaz won a couple of events, taking the mile in 5:52.9 and the 2-mile in 12:51.2, to lead the Willow Glen girls to victory.

Steve Evans soared to wins in the triple jump at 39-2 and the high jump at 5-6, and Nate Oxsen was the shot put at 38-5 and the discus at 126-8 to lead the Rams to the boys win.

    Three shutouts

The girls softball team at Presentation was involved in three shutouts last week in Mt. Hamilton Division play, but in two of the three games it was the Panthers getting whitewashed.

Freshman hurler Mikaela Gillette opened the week in impressive fashion, flipping a shutout in Presentation's 1-0 win over Piedmont Hills.

Nicole Rousseve doubled to account for one of the two Presentation hits in the win.

The Panthers broke up a scoreless tie with a run in the last of the sixth, and then Gillette went out in the seventh to nail down the shutout win.

But it was Presentation getting shut out later in the week, 9-0 by Westmont and 4-0 for Mitty.

The two losses dropped the Panthers to 3-6 in the division and to 7-10 for the year.

Willow Glen lost twice last week by matching scores of 14-1, losing to Prospect and Mt. Pleasant in Santa Teresa Division play.

    Rams win two

The Willow Glen boys volleyball team rolled to two more wins last week to improve to 6-3 in Mt. Hamilton Division play.

Mark Sarinana hammered down 12 kills to lead the Rams to a 15-7, 15-2, 15-7 win over Westmont, and he came back with 19 kills in a 15-3, 15-11, 14-16, 15-11 win over Valley Christian.

The Rams, 15-9 for the year, were to host Prospect on April 23 and will entertain Oak Grove on April 25, 6 p.m., before taking part in the Los Gatos Invitational on Saturday.

    Wang wins

Sophomore William Wang won twice at No. 1 singles, but the Willow Glen boys tennis team lost twice last week in the West Valley Division of the BVAL.

Wang won 6-3, 6-2, but the Rams lost 5-2 to Silver Creek, and he came back with a 6-0, 6-4 victory, but the Rams fell 5-2 to Independence.

Willow Glen is now 3-8 in division play.

    Rams are 1-11

The young Willow Glen baseball team dropped three games last week to slip to 1-11 in the rugged Mt. Hamilton Division race.

Sophomore Chris Hobbs doubled, but the Rams lost 13-3 to Leigh.

The Rams lost 16-1 in five innings to Valley Christian, then dropped a tough 5-1 nod to Leland despite getting a couple of hits from soph John Gibilisco.

    Bruins sink Rams

The Willow Glen golf team dropped to 8-4 for the year with two losses to Branham last week.
