Lead On--Presentation High School senior and Willow Glen resident Maria Erqueta has what it takes to lead her peers into the next millennium. Competing against 7,500 student leaders across the U.S., Erqueta was selected as one of 150 recipients of the national Principal's Leadership Award--an honor that includes a $1,000 college scholarship. Nominated by Presentation High School principal Mary Miller, Erqueta was selected based on her participation in service organizations, clubs and athletics, achievements in the arts and sciences, employment experience and academic record.
Who Cares--Willow Glen's Joel Theisen cares a lot, his focus being on seniors and their families, Theisen has been named vice president of product development for AdvoLife, a home-based, long-term care company serving Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. Theisen is also a founder of this start-up which is spearheading the development of this new niche in long-term care.
Moms and Grads--It's been a busy several years for these two local high school seniors. Hilary Ludwig and Macie Pumphrey, members of the National Charity League, were recently honored for their completion of a program of philanthropic work, cultural activities, social events and a career awareness program--a six year program, no less. The NCL is a non-profit organization for mothers and daughters whose goal is to foster a sense of community responsibility in the girls, as well as to strengthen the mother/daughter relationship. Moms and daughters celebrated the high school seniors' achievements at the annual Senior Presentation.

Budding golfers got the world on a swing
After one of the most successful seasons in its history, the Willow Glen High School golf team has hit the road in search of even greener fairways. The team left Monday, May 10, for the CCS championships at Rancho Cañada Golf Course in Monterey. Not only did the entire team qualify for this year's tournament, but three of the young golfers will also be competing in the individual golf competitions. Coaches Arvo Voip and Tom Myers report that even though team members and their mentors were not allowed to practice together over the past week, those devoted swingers are still hitting the greens on their own.
