It was quite a week for the Willow Glen girls field hockey team. The Rams came close to knocking off league powerhouse St. Francis, fighting the Lancers to a 1-1 tie. Then the Rams did that one better--they upset unbeaten Mitty 2-0.

Willow Glen stretched its record to 3-3-3 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League with the win and the tie last week.

The Rams tagged Mitty with its first loss of the league season on Friday, blanking the Monarchs 2-0. Mitty is now 6-1-2 with one game to play in the league season.

Junior forward Jenny Holt scored a first-half goal off an assist from senior Samantha Bruni, then senior Lindsey Rovai added some insurance with a second-half goal off assists from seniors Allison Lake and Nikki Leader.

Willow Glen, 10-3-3 for the year, had opened the week with the impressive 1-1 tie against league power St. Francis. The Lancers are 4-1-3 heading into the final week of league play.

St. Francis led 1-0 at intermission, but Holt's second-half goal off a Leader assist helped the Rams pull out the tie.

The Rams will close out the regular season this week when they visit Prospect on Nov. 1, 2:45 p.m. The Panthers are winless in league play.

    Panthers win two

Julie Harris led the Presentation girls volleyball team to back-to-back wins in the Mt. Hamilton Division last week.

The Panthers pounded Independence 15-0, 15-2, 15-5 behind five kills by Harris, and they came back to whip Valley Christian 15-4, 15-0, 15-6 with Harris and Lindsey Sanford nailing five kills apiece.

The Panthers improved to 11-1 in the division with the two victories.

Presentation is 27-6 for the year after posting a 1-3 record at the rugged Santa Barbara Tournament last weekend.

Lynzy Caton starred for the Panthers in a 15-7, 15-11, 17-15 win over Santa Barbara, but the locals lost to Mira Costa, Centennial of Bakersfield and San Marcos of Santa Barbara.

Caton, Harris, Sarah Nadler and Taylor Rayfield were kill leaders for the Panthers in the tournament.

In other local action last week, the Willow Glen girls dropped a 15-9, 15-7, 15-6 decision to Mt. Pleasant in the Santa Teresa Division.

    Whelan is all-league

Tori Whelan of Presentation earned a place on the Peninsula League all-league golf team by placing 10th overall at the league finals played last week.

Whelan fired a 94 on the par-71 Poplar Creek Golf Course in San Mateo to finish 10th and win an all-league berth.

    Barnes wins title

Pioneer's Kimmie Barnes won the singles title at the Santa Teresa Division girls tennis tournament last week.

Barnes won 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals before beating Julie Martin of Prospect 7-5, 6-4 to win the singles title.

In other Santa Teresa Division action last week, Willow Glen evened its season record at 7-7 with a 5-2 win over Overfelt.

Sophomore Caitlin Hannon pulled out a 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 win at No. 1 singles to start the Rams on their way to the team win. Kelsey Giambruno chipped in with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles.

The Rams could manage just a 2-2 split in singles play, but swept the three doubles matches to claim the win over the Royals.

Stephanie Mansfield and Kristina Ravo won 6-0, 2-6, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Chu Huyhn and Erica Trevino won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Nhuchi Tran and Jovanie Barraza won 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 at No. 3.

In Mt. Hamilton Division play, Natalie Ackerman won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles to lead Presentation to a 6-1 win over Piedmont Hills.

The Panthers improved to 9-5 in the division.

    Cook, Phan star

Jennifer Cook and Ngoan Phan each ran well for Willow Glen in cross country action last week at Montgomery Hill Park in San Jose.

Cook covered the 2.95-mile course in 22:20 to finish second overall and lead the Rams to a win over San Jose, but Willow Glen lost 24-32 to Valley Christian. The Rams are 4-2 in the West Valley Division.

The Willow Glen boys lost 27-28 to San Jose and 22-35 to Valley Christian.

    Polo losses for WG

The Willow Glen girls and boys water polo teams each lost last week.

The WG girls dropped a tough 6-5 nod to Homestead in a nonleague game. Junior Courtney Livak pitched in four goals and Alicia Barreto also scored for the Rams in the loss.

In boys action, Kyle Buchanan tossed in three goals and Josh Liu and Alex Nguyen added two apiece, but Willow Glen dropped a tight 11-9 decision to Piedmont Hills.

The loss left the Rams 0-8 in the division.

    Rams slip to 0-8

The Willow Glen football team dropped a 16-0 decision to Westmont last Saturday night to drop to 0-8 for the year. The Rams are 0-5 in the Santa Teresa Division.

Willow Glen will try to get on the winning track this week when the Rams visit Leland on Nov. 4, 1:30 p.m., for a nonleague game. The Chargers are also in the midst of a winless year. Leland is 0-8 for the season and 0-5 in the Mt. Hamilton Division.

Willow Glen will wrap up the season at home against Gunderson on Nov. 9, 2:45 p.m. The Grizzlies are 3-1 in the division after an impressive 26-12 win over Del Mar last Saturday.
