The Willow Glen Business and Professional Association (WGBPA) made a rite of passage into the 21st century by launching its new website to coincide with Willow Glen's Founders' Day on Sept. 8.
Kim Jennett of Kim Jennett Studios maintains the website, which is accessible at www.downtownwillowglen.org.
"One thing I wanted was for it to look like no other city's website," Jennett said. "Other regional websites look like Santana Row's—you know, real blocky. I figured it would be more fun to do something a little more theme-based," Jennett said. "I wanted to give the website that sort of 'dusty road' feel."
Linda Waltrip, the WGBPA's second vice president and owner of vintage clothing store Park Place, 1318 Lincoln Ave., was assigned to head a website committee. After, considering about 12 candidates, the committee chose Jennett Studios, in part because Jennett is local.
Even though portions of the website are still under construction, the WGBPA wanted to launch it on Founders' Day.
The website not only acts as a business directory, provides maps and lists events, it even serves as a historical reference for the community.
"I've set up a section called 'Your History,' " Jennett said. "It's where Willow Glen residents can submit their stories about living in Willow Glen and even submit old pictures. We have a really deep sense of history here. People don't say they're from San Jose—they say they're from Willow Glen."
Jennett may stop these same people while they stroll down Lincoln Avenue. She said she's setting up a person-on-the-street page, where she'll post pictures and quotes from people whom she'll randomly approach.
Though the purpose of the website is mainly to promote Lincoln Avenue businesses, Jennett said that soon there will be a links page connecting visitors to the Willow Glen Neighborhood Association (www.wgna.net) and the San Jose Convention & Visitors Bureau (www.sanjose.org), among other important local websites.
