Caltrans, San Jose unite to attack litter

The city of San Jose has teamed with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to form the "Pick Up San José" campaign. Campaign staff plan have identified 100 areas in San Jose, including highways, where litter is a major problem, and members of the San Jose General Services Department will focus on cleaning the places in the community identified on the "100 Hot Spots" list. Caltrans maintenance staff based in the South Bay will limit their cleaning efforts to freeway ramps and mainlines.

"A clean city strengthens the pride of our residents," said San Jose Mayor Ron Gonzales. "A clean city helps keep our neighborhoods strong and safe and welcomes visitors and businesses. With everyone's help, we can eradicate the eyesore of litter, just as we have successfully wiped out graffiti over the past four years."

The program also calls on approximately 1,000 neighborhood volunteers dispersed throughout San Jose's 10 districts to clean up each district's most littered sites.

Following are some of the "hot spots" in Willow Glen.

* The south side of Chiechi Avenue between Chiechi and Willard

* Southwest Expressway on the north side of the railroad tracks between Leigh and Stokes avenues

* The south side of Parkmoor between Meridian Avenue and the Highway 280 off ramp

* The east side of Meridian Avenue between Fruitdale and the northbound Highway 280 on ramp

* The terminus of Home Street next to the Los Gatos Creek

* The south side of Highway 280 between the southbound entrance from Menker Street on Moorpark to the southbound Meridian Avenue exit

* The west side of Highway 880 between The Alameda and Bascom Avenue

* The northbound Highway 880 off ramp to southbound Bascom Avenue and the northbound on ramp at Bascom Avenue

* The northbound Highway 880 off ramp to The Alameda

* Highway 280 south and the Bird Avenue exit area, including Bird Avenue along the underpass

* The north side of Willow Street between Highway 87 and McLellan Avenue
