Lainie Kazan, the award-winning entertainer most recently known for her role in the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding, will lend her voice to Dennis Nahat's "In Studio D" in the opening program for Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley.
Nahat's company of dancers will interact with Kazan as she belts out eight original torch songs by Peter Wright set to a story that is described as part ballet and part New York piano bar.
Nahat, artistic director of Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley, based the story on his own experience as a young dancer in a New York City rehearsal hall, chronicling the long and intense hours that dancers and choreographers spend training for a career on stage.
"All performers' lives have one thing in common—the studio," Nahat says. "Life in the studio becomes life itself."
The season opener also includes "Starlight" and the premier of Nahat's "Prince Igor", based on Alexander Borodin's opera.
The Choreography of Dennis Nahat will be run for just five performances, October 1720 at the Center for the Performing Arts, 255 Almaden Blvd. in downtown San Jose. Call the ballet box office at 408.288.2800 or visit www.balletsanjose.org for information about the entire season.
