Bill's Cafe, a Willow Glen favorite, has stopped serving dinner. It's not a sign of hard times, however—the restaurant's owners, Bill and Amalia Rizos, are just hoping to spend more time together in the evening.
The restaurant's new hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the Rizos' daughter, Dina, is now managing the restaurant.
"Our ultimate goal is to spend several months a year in our homeland, Greece. We have been part of the Willow Glen community for 25 years and hope to continue for many more," Bill wrote in his announcement of the changes.
"Since we opened our restaurant, we have never eaten a meal as a family, except for Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Year," he said. "We love serving our customers, but it's time for my wife, Amalia, and me to enjoy our golden years."
Rizos' idea of semiretirement is to be at the restaurant only four or five days a week instead of his usual seven days a week.
"I will still have my hand in the business," said Bill.
He added, "We have served thousands of meals and have seen many a generation grow up and return with their own children. We are so fortunate to have so many regular customers that have been loyal to us over the years."
The restaurant is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.
Dina Rizos has been working in her parents' restaurant since she was 10. She would get out of school, sit in the restaurant doing her homework and wait on customers every day.
"Dina knows how to run this place," says Rizos. "Her mother and I are very comfortable with her carrying on the family business."
The Rizos came to the United States from the Greek village of Voliare in 1951. He worked in several restaurants until he purchased his first restaurant, The Rendezvous, in Cupertino.
Now the couple is looking forward to spending some relaxing time at his house in Athens, Greece.
"There were rumors that I was doing this because I was ill or because business was not so good," Bill said. "None of that is true. I am in my 60s and may not be as fast in the kitchen as I used to be, but who is at my age? I am healthy, and business is good."
The breakfast and lunch menus have not changed. Customers can still depend on the same quality of food that they have come to expect from the chefs who have been working at the cafe for years now.
"It has been wonderful to see customers who used to come in when they were children bring their own families. We are very grateful to all of our customers. I will still be here most days to tell them that and serve them our wonderful food," Bill said.
Bill's Cafe, 1115 Willow St., is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. For more information, to make reservations or to place a take-out order, call 408.294.1125.
