San Jose police arrested 41-year-old Gregery Hunter Williams on Oct. 24 at 4:40 a.m. after a homeowner hearing someone on the roof and seeing a man's shadow through the skylight called authorities to report an alleged burglary in progress.

When the police arrived they were unable to locate the suspect. But the homeowner—who did not want to be identified—and lives on Cheryl Way— said she saw a man in the hallway. She and her daughter locked themselves in the bedroom, and when her daughter began screaming, police officers rushed into the home and found the suspect lying in a bed in the master bedroom.

Williams was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail and charged with burglary, prowling and peeping, and being under the influence of methamphetamine.

Detective Jeff Moore of the San Jose Police Department's Child Exploitation Detail assigned to the case said he suspects that Williams broke into the house with the intent to commit sexual assault. Williams is a registered sex offender.

He was arraigned on Oct. 28 and scheduled to enter a plea on Nov. 14.

Williams had been renting a room from a Cheryl Way resident when he allegedly broke into the house next door, which was undergoing construction to have a second story added. The police said because the home was being remodeled the suspect was able to jump off the roof and hide under the house when authorities arrived. As authorities searched for the suspect, he entered the home.

The neighbors were surprised to learn that Williams had a record as a sex offender, and were concerned that this information was not brought to their attention, said one resident.

"This just takes the cake," said one neighbor.

And she added that the residents on Cheryl Way intend to write a letter to the woman who rented to Williams requesting that he never be allowed in the neighborhood again.
