Willow Glen doesn't have much hope of taking the championship trophy away from Leland this spring in the volleyball race in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
But the Rams could get the Tiki award.
Willow Glen and Leland will play in their annual Tiki Match this week with the Tiki award--created by Rams coach Jef Wind--up for grabs.
The clubs will square off the annual event on April 28, 7 p.m., when the Rams visit the Chargers for a league match.
"The Leland gym will look like a tropical oasis in San Jose," said Leland coach Jason Hilbert.
The Rams are hot as they head into the Thursday match, but they have little hope of catching the even hotter Chargers. Leland pushed its league record to 11-0 and its season mark to 19-7 with a hard-earned 20-25, 25-21, 25-16, 22-25, 15-12 win over a scrappy Westmont team last week. It was one of three wins for Leland last week.
Willow Glen also won three matches last week, pushing its league record to 8-3 and its overall mark to 13-10. But with just four matches left in the regular season, catching the Chargers is hardly possible.
Still, winning the Tiki award is well within Willow Glen's sights. Veterans John Vlkovic, Jared Petite, Jason Curry, Nick Baker and Alex Pelayo will join 6-foot-3 sophomore Tobin Chase in Willow Glen's Thursday quest.
The Rams, who will host winless Gunderson on April 26 at 6 p.m., beat Branham, Pioneer and Prospect last week in league play.
Senior Andrew Veggian and Chase nailed seven kills apiece to lead the Rams to a 25-18, 25-14, 25-19 win over Pioneer last Friday night.
A night earlier, Veggian had a team-high 11 kills to drive the Rams to a 25-14, 25-10, 25-19 win over Branham.
Willow Glen had opened the week with a 25-21, 25-13, 25-21 victory over Prospect. Pelayo starred for the Rams with 10 kills.
