There's nothing that kills a rally in a baseball game faster than a double-play--unless, of course, it's a triple-play.
The Mets of the Willow Glen Little League minor A division discovered that the hard way when the Athletics turned the rare defensive gem in a recent game.
"It was pretty exciting," said A's manager Michael Lehman. "I've never been involved in a triple-play before, and to see 6- and 7-year-olds do it ... "
He almost couldn't believe his eyes. But when pitcher Calvin Quittner snagged a line drive for one out, threw to second baseman Dominic Goode for the second out and the play continued to Angel Pinedo at first, the A's had done it.
"It was fun to watch," added Lehman. "It had to be a real quick play, and it wasn't an easy play at all."
The Mets had runners at first and second when the next hitter ripped a liner up the middle. Quittner made the catch leaning to his right, then spun and fired Goode, the only 6-year-old on the team. Goode tagged second for the second out, then threw on to Pinedo at first to complete the triple-play.
