The season came to a disappointing end for the Stanford women's basketball team when the Cardinal lost 76-69 to Michigan State to miss a trip to the NCAA Final Four by just a single game.
Well, if the Stanford women want to avoid another disappointment, they'd better not challenge the team coming to their house on May 4 to a pick-up game.
The Cardinal will play host to the Willow Glen NJB fourth-grade all-stars this week, and the local girls are fresh off of a championship performance at the NJB National Tournament held April 15-17 in Los Angeles.
Willow Glen will visit the Cardinal in Maples Pavilion on May 4 to meet and practice with the Stanford women's team. Maybe the local girls can give the Cardinal a few tips on just how they rolled to the national championship.
Willow Glen won four straight games in Southern California, beating Chino Valley of Arizona 41-22, Castro Valley 42-22, Berryessa 37-19 and Palomar of San Diego 31-24 to win the Evans Division crown.
High scorers for the squad throughout the tournament were Lauren Holt and Maggie Von Massenhausen, and in three of the four games played every played scored.
The coaches praised the defensive work of Hannah Vane, Leslie Nelson, Katy Drennan and Von Massenhausen and singled out Ashley Smith, Holt, Jordy Scott and Taylor Morway for controlling the offensive and defensive boards.
Coaches added that Stephanie Rebagliati was the team assist leader, and praised her versatility since played every position on the floor at some point in the tourney.
Willow Glen competed well in the tourney despite losing a key player, Allison Clark, who suffered a broken leg in the sectional tourney.
The Willow Glen Lightening had finished first place and the Willow Glen Grizzlies were third in the 26-team Silicon Valley NJB league season. The best of the two teams joined forces to create a 10-player all-star squad for the sectionals, and Willow Glen posted a 5-1 record to earn a berth in the nationals.
Coaches Helen Gengras, Tom Clark and Anthony Holt led to team to SoCal for the finals.
