Wine Styles gets a thumbs up to move onto Lincoln Avenue
By Alicia Upano
Wine Styles, a national wine shop franchise hoping to find a home in Willow Glen, received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the community.

The Nov. 3 community meeting was the public's chance to comment on San Jose residents Tom and Claire Martell's plan to open Wine Styles on Lincoln Avenue. The shop will provide 100 to 150 world-class wines, many under $25, and a tasting bar.

More than 40 residents, business and property owners attended the meeting. The Martells received a nod of approval from representatives of the Willow Glen Business and Professional Association and Willow Glen Neighborhood Association as well.

"One of the most important things is to make sure we don't have empty storefronts," property owner Michael Mulcahy said. "I think we should thank the Martells for their investment and interest in Willow Glen."

Several residents commented on how the avenue has become more upscale over the past 15 years, and that Wine Styles would be continuing that trend.

A handful of people were opposed, including Willow Glen Liquors & Wine Shop owner Chuon Doan.

Doan argued that adding another establishment selling alcohol would cause problems such as loitering, fighting and theft, all of which have occurred in front of his shop. In addition, he said parking is already limited.

Besides Doan, The Grapevine and Quik Stop Market sell alcohol in the vicinity.

"I think competition is healthy and that's what creates interest in Willow Glen," Tom Martell said. "We think we have something to offer the community; we hope Willow Glen will embrace us."

San Jose planner Carol Hamilton said Wine Styles must receive a liquor license exception from the city because of a saturation of liquor stores in the area.

Hamilton said the San Jose Planning Commission may be scheduled to review the liquor license exception and conditional use permit for the wine tasting bar and retail sale of off-site alcohol consumption on Dec. 7.
