Abdalla, Corona lead Rams to league title
By Kevin Sparrer
Mohamed Abdalla and Marcos Corona found themselves competing for the boys varsity championship in the Blossom Valley Athletic League Championship cross country meet on Oct. 31. But because they both run for Willow Glen, there was no trick--only a treat.

Abdalla and Corona finished one-two at the league meet to lead Willow Glen to a first-place team finish in the Mount Hamilton Division, and to first overall in the race.

Sophomore Abdalla was first in 15:29 with junior Corona less than 30 seconds back, second in 15:52.

Senior Robert Ramos was sixth in 16:42 with Justin McArthur 11th in 16:56 junior Samson Galato 17th in 17:08.

Within the Mt. Hamilton Division, Abdalla and Corona finished one-two, of course, with Ramos sixth, McArthur 10th and Galato 13th.

Eyoel Galato led the Rams with a first-place finish in the frosh-soph race, running 18:00. Behind Galato for Willow Glen was sophomore Danny Owens, third in 18:44; freshman Abdul Kamara, 22nd in 19:47; freshman Ivan Oseguera, 54th in 20:50; and sophomore Justin Garcia, 65th in 21:06.

The Rams finished third as a team in both the overall standings and the division standings.

In the division, Galato was first, Owens third, Kamara 16th, Oseguera 32nd and Garcia 35th.

Senior Maria Sosa led the girls varsity cross country team to a victory as well. Sosa finished the race seventh overall in 20:13, just ahead of ninth-place sophomore Kari Server in 20:30. The next female Ram to finish was sophomore Hayley Tharp in 18th in 20:56, with sophomore Michelle Moran 22nd in 21:25 and junior Nancy Velazquez 26th in 21:37.

Willow Glen's victory came in both the overall race and the Mt. Hamilton Division standings. Sosa placed fifth, Server seventh, Tharp 12th, Moran 15th and Velazquez 17th in the division race.

Willow Glen's girls junior varsity team was just as successful as the varsity, with sophomore Jaclyn Anderson leading the squad to a victory.

Anderson finished second overall in 22:09 with sophomore running mate Britney Overcamp in fourth place in 22:35. Freshman Kaylyn Hausmann fifth in 22:57, sophomore Haide Esteban ninth in 23:12 and junior Anna Giang 17th in 24:09.

Just like the varsity, the JV team also took the division win: Anderson was second, Overcamp fourth, Hausmann fifth, Esteban eighth and Giang was 15th.
