It was a great run, but the 2005 season came to an end last week for the Willow Glen girls volleyball team.

The Rams, who tied with Evergreen Valley for first place in the Blossom Valley Athletic League Santa Teresa Division season with a 10-2 record, lost to No. 3 seed St. Francis 25-13, 25-22, 25-14 in the quarterfinals of the Central Coast Section Division III playoffs. The Rams finished the season with a 21-13 record overall.

Willow Glen, the No. 11 seed in Division III, had opened the playoffs with a mild upset win over No. 6 Santa Cruz (16-10), winning 24-26, 25-15, 21-25, 25-12, 15-9.

The win sent the Rams up against powerhouse St. Francis (23-7) in the second round of the tournament, but the public school proved no match for the private school.

The loss marked the end of the season for the Rams, but what a season it's been.

"I've been very impressed by this team," said third-year Willow Glen coach Carlee Howie of her Rams. "I've had the opportunity to coach some great players in the last three years, but this year I'm blessed to coach a great team."

"All the girls do their part," she added, "and the starters are only as good as the non-starters who push them every day in practice."

Team members included Andrea Nankivell, Angela Pizella, Leah Mee, Samantha Carter, Katie Joyce, Kelly Keiley, Lauren Scanlan, Danae Rodriguez, Corina Lopez, Emily Roberts and Stephanie Wilson.

The No. 1 seed Presentation girls team remains alive in the CCS Division III playoffs following a thrilling four-game win over No. 8 Aragon (20-10). The Panthers pulled out a 23-25-25-11, 25-23, 25-18 victory over the Dons to advance to the tourney semifinals.

Presentation, third in the West Catholic Athletic League behind Mitty (7-0) and St. Ignatius (6-1) at 4-3, takes a 19-13 season record up against No. 12 Burlingame (20-12) on Nov. 17 at Burlingame. No. 2 SI (30-5) faces No. 3 St. Francis (23-7) the same night. Matches are set for 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. with the winners to meet on Nov. 19 at West Valley College.
