Mentally unstable man bothers people
San Jose police officers took an adult male into custody during the afternoon of March 1, after he was reportedly bothering patrons in Willow Glen's Bramhall Park.
Police responded to a call, and when the authorities arrived at the park the individual was deemed mentally unstable, according to San Jose police spokesman Enrique Garcia.
He was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and held for 72 hours for a psychiatric evaluation, Garcia said.
Ballet will host a free performance
Ballet San Jose hosts a free presentation for ballet lovers, "Point to Pointe: The Making of a Ballet Dancer" on March 23, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.
Ballet San Jose's artistic and executive director Dennis Nahat will conduct the one-hour program, which details professional dance training and demonstrations from the company on leg, arm and torso technique. The company will also perform Il Distratto, a 30-minute comic ballet from Lew Christensen.
The event takes place at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts, 255 Almaden Blvd.
Juvenile arrested for local car fires
A juvenile has been arrested for last year's car fires in east Willow Glen, according to San Jose Fire Capt. Alberto Olmos. Because the individual involved is a juvenile, the fire department and the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office Juvenile Wards Division cannot release any details.
Four cars were torched in the neighborhood on April 26, 2006. Beginning at 3:58 a.m., a Mazda Miata on Johnston Avenue was set aflame. At 4:27 a.m., a Mercedes near Coastland and Byerly avenues was also set on fire. Two more cars near Curtner and Coastland avenues also burned at 4:42 a.m.
New home OK'd on
a subdivided lot
The city has given Ted Borns the green light to build a new home on Cottle Avenue near Pine Avenue. The property was recently subdivided.
A planned development permit was needed to build the two-story, 2,909-square-foot home and 445-square-foot detached garage on the 0.15-acre lot. The permit was approved at a Feb. 28 San Jose Planning Director hearing.
The city received a letter of protest from neighbor Walter MacDonald, who said the home was larger than adjacent houses and contrasted with the rest of the neighborhood, according to city staff.
Neighbor Cathleen Fortune said she and her husband received multiple offers when they subdivided their lot, but chose Borns because of his thoughtful manner toward homebuilding and the existing neighborhood.
River park, garden
seeks volunteers
With the days getting longer and the air smelling like spring, residents can grab their gloves and spade and help out at the Guadalupe River Park & Gardens.
Volunteers are needed in the historic orchard, Guadalupe River trails, dahlia display garden, iris garden, native plants landscape, and the drought-tolerant garden. Flexible hours are available during the week and Saturdays.
Some of the volunteering is scheduled, such as the work at the Heritage Rose Garden, which occurs on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.
Administrative help is also needed in the Visitor & Education Center, and education and library volunteers are welcome.
