Book series created by local author captures highlights of Willow Glen

Willow Glen resident Dave Clarke Mora takes the phrase "a picture is worth a thousand words" to heart when creating books for his new series Our Town Books, which highlights various local neighborhoods in photographs.

"Our Town: Willow Glen," Clarke Mora's first publication in the series, is an 80-page hardcover book filled with 150 color photos of popular areas throughout Willow Glen, including local restaurants, schools, homes, shops and places of worship.

"It's our diversity that makes this area distinctive, more pleasant and real," says Clarke Mora, 53. "I want readers to remember what makes life in Willow Glen special."

Although some written commentary and a brief history are included, particularly on Willow Glen's historical homes, Clarke Mora says the book's focus is on visual appeal.

"These landmarks build the fabric of our daily lives," Clarke Mora says. "I wanted people to appreciate the beauty of their neighborhood in full color."

Bill's Cafe, Willow Glen Frozen Yogurt Company and the Fleming home are just some of the local establishments pictured in the book.

Clarke Mora says he also wants readers to remember the little things that are often overlooked in Willow Glen, such as the colorfully painted benches at the bus stops.

Clarke Mora, who has lived in Willow Glen for four years, says his background in community journalism helped in his creation of the book series. He graduated from San Jose State University in radio and television broadcasting and went on to film school at UCLA.

Clarke Mora took all the photos for the book himself, walking throughout the neighborhood with his wife of 33 years, Nanci.

Clarke Mora recently completed another Our Town series for Los Gatos.

"I think people like to see a piece of their world in print," Clarke Mora says.

Clarke Mora's book can be found or bought online at ourtownbooks. com.

"Our Town: Willow Glen" is on display at Bayside Community Church, Bill's Cafe, Willow Glen Books, Siena Bistro and Willow Glen Frozen Yogurt and will also be available for purchase at the Willow Glen Elementary PTA Bookfair Nov. 26-29.
