Sale is a timely idea for vintage shop

By Mary Gottschalk

If you've always wished you could have shopped in the 1940s, 1950s or even the 1980s, the Vintage and Artisan Block Sale on June 27 is for you.

Organizer Joanne Perez says there will be booths in front of and alongside her Time Zone Vintage shop at 1045 Park Ave., as well as across the street in front of Tozeero at 1040 Park Ave.

Perez says many of the vendors are "people who have been collecting for years and don't have any more room."

Among the vendors will be people selling vintage brass fire extinguishers, jewelry, posters, paintings, furniture, clothing, accessories and collectibles.

If this sale is successful, Perez says, she and the owners of Tozeero may do them on a monthly basis.

Perez opened Time Zone Vintage on April 1 of this year, but it's not her first foray into vintage retailing. She operated a popular shop with the same name on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley for seven years before closing it in 2006.

"When I was in junior high I dressed vintage, and now I'm 54," Perez says.

"I went to church bazaars and rummage sales. I've been doing this a long time."

Perez spent 2007 battling cancer and much of 2008 recovering from the chemotherapy and radiation treatments. She is now in remission.

Even during the two years she didn't have a shop and was selling on eBay, Perez would find herself "shopping and buying things and thinking this would be great for the store. Selling on eBay is not the same as the feel of having your own store and doing windows and everything."

Friends and family kept encouraging Perez to open a new store, and that's what she finally did.

Currently she has only the front 600 feet at 1045 Park Ave., but by the end of this year she will expand into the back for a total of 1,200 square feet.

"If something is meant to be, you're going to do it," Perez says.

"I'm very happy to be back."

Vintage and Artisan Block Sale, 1045 and 1040 Park Ave., 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 27. For additional information call 408.288.5607.
