Teams win academic honors
By Dick Sparrer
Rich Prsha was pleased that his Los Gatos badminton players achieved their preseason goal on the courts by winning more matches this spring than they did in 2007.
He was even more pleased, though, with their achievement in the classroom. Los Gatos was named as a Central Coast Section 2008 Spring Season Scholastic champion.
The Wildcats posted a combined 3.7518 grade point average to rank as the highest-performing badminton team in the section.
The Gatos badminton team ranked fifth among all spring sports team in the CCS, actually finishing a couple of notches behind another Los Gatos team on the overall list.
The Pinewood girls swimming and diving team topped the CCS with a 3.9160 GPA with the Los Gatos girls second at 3.8308. The Pacific Collegiate boys track and field team was next at 3.8000.
Joining the Pinewood girls swimming and diving team, Pacific Collegiate boys track and field squad and Los Gatos badminton team as team champions are: Harker School--baseball (3.5530), golf (3.6280), girls lacrosse (3.7470), girls softball (3.6290); St. Francis--gymnastics (3.4170); Sacred Heart Prep--boys lacrosse (3.3817); Menlo-Atherton--boys swimming and diving (3.7083); Menlo--tennis (3.7021); and Mt. Madonna--volleyball (3.6550).
Local schools in the running for scholastic honors were: Lynbrook--badminton (6th, 3.4845), boys swimming and diving (3rd, 3.6582), tennis (2nd, 3.6983); and The King's Academy--volleyball (3rd, 3.5125), boys swimming and diving (4th, 3.4565).
