New Whole Foods
in Almaden delays
opening to 2010

Whole Foods Markets has postponed the opening of its store near the corner of Almaden Expressway and Blossom Hill Road.

Demolition has started at the site, which was slated to open in late 2009, but a company spokeswoman said in June that it would now open in fall of 2010.

A new regional manager for Whole Foods shuffled the opening dates of several stores in Northern California.

Neighbors to host
first Fourth of July
parade with floats

The Almaden Valley's T.J. Martin Park Neighborhood Association is hosting an inaugural Fourth of July parade from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

All are welcome to join; no fee is required, and participants are encouraged to decorate their strollers, cars or motorcycles. Floats are also encouraged.

Relay for Life
takes place
this weekend

The Almaden Relay for Life, the 24-hour relay that raises funds for the American Cancer Society, takes place from 10 a.m. June 27 to 10 a.m. June 28 on the track at Leland High School. The event takes place in communities throughout the country.

The opening ceremony Is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday, with the popular luminaria ceremony at 9 p.m.; closing ceremonies are from 9 to 10 a.m. Sunday. Community Center provides fun way to get in shape

The Camden Community Center is offering Zumba classes every Monday from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m.

Zumba is a dance workout program fused with rhythmic beats, and the class will feature Latin, African, Arabian and Hindu music with calorie-burning exercises.

Catholic schools
set to install
new solar panels

The Catholic Diocese of San Jose is working with Photon Energy Services Inc. to develop a solar energy system at five elementary schools, including St. Christopher Elementary School in Willow Glen. The other schools are Holy Family, Queen of Apostles, St. Lucy and Holy Spirit in Almaden Valley.

The first phase of installations began in June and will continue throughout the summer. Seventy percent of each school's electricity will come from the panels upon completion.

lack insurance

A new prescription discount program is being offered by the National League of Cities and the San Jose Housing Department for residents without health insurance. The Prescription Discount Card program provides savings--up to 20 percent--on medications.

lives of animals

A free program on the wild animals of California will take place on June 30 from 2 to 2:50 p.m. in the community room of the Rose Garden Library, 1580 Naglee Ave.

The program offers insights on the secret lives of the animals that live around us. It is sponsored by the Friends of the Rose Garden Library.

Celtic music group
will perform at
Mission City

The music duo Four Shillings Short will perform from 7:30 to 11 p.m. on June 27 at Mission City Coffee Roasting Co., 2221 The Alameda.

Four Shillings Short is the duo of Christy Martin and Aodn Og O'Tuana, who sing and play a variety of instruments, including sitar, dulcimer, mandolin, banjo, guitar and recorder. They perform Celtic, traditional folk and world music.

Annual car show
is fundraiser for
Hospice of Valley

Hospice of the Valley hosts the sixth annual Classics & Hot Rods car show June 28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 1680 Martin Ave., Santa Clara.

The event is free, but there will be refreshments for sale and a donation drawing.

The car show draws attention to hospice and grief care services while raising funds for care of adults and children facing life-limiting illness.

More than 90 custom, classic cars, trucks, motorcycles and hot rods will be on display. Book sale benefits
Willow Glen
branch library

Friends of the Willow Glen Library host a book sale on June 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the community room of the library at 1157 Minnesota Ave.

Thousands of books have been collected, with most selling at $1.50 an inch, measured along the spine. A few special books will be individually priced.

Offerings will include fiction, nonfiction, hardbacks, paperbacks, children's, DVDs, CDs, recorded books and videotapes.

All proceeds benefit the library.

Reading is just
the ticket for
summer days

Daffy Dave will celebrate the joys of summer reading with his comedy, magic and juggling show on June 30 from noon to 12:45 p.m. at the Willow Glen Library, 1157 Minnesota Ave.

His show is free and will include silly songs, storytelling and magic tricks.
