Pioneer boys, Leland girls run to track titles

What seniors Marquee Heffner and Craig Reynolds did for the Pioneer boys, junior Stephanie Barnett and sophomore Katie Nelms did for the Leland girls last week. And the results were exactly the same--they led their teams to championships in the Blossom Valley Athletic League Santa Teresa Division meet on the Lincoln track.

Heffner won one event and was second in two others and Reynolds claimed a gold medal to help the Mustangs run up 110 points to outdistance second-place Independence (86.20) in the race for the division crown.

On the girls side, Nelms won three events and Barnett won two and was second in another to lead the Leland girls past Live Oak. The Chargers won the girls crown with 122 points and the Acorns were a distant second at 81.

Heffner soared to a win in the long jump at 20-7 and was second in both the 100-meter dash in 11.33 and the 200 in 22.6. He was also a member of Pioneer's first-place 4x100 relay that ran 44.28.

Reynolds won his specialty, the high jump, with a leap of 6-0.

Pioneer sophomore Nathan Strum supported with threes second in the 3,200 meters in 4:38.23, the 800 in 2:03.23 and the 3,200 in 10:08.72.

Senior Tyler Chase was second in the shot put at 43-0, sophomore Jimmy McElravy was fourth in both the 110 high hurdles in 16.97 and the 300 intermediate hurdles in 42.51, senior Dan Perez was sixth in the 100 in 11.94, junior Sam Villegas was fourth in the 200 in 22.87, senior Ryan Ravel was eighth in the 3,200 in 11:04.5, junior Makepa Fojas was fourth in the discus at 137-0 and sophomore Michael Uboh tied for fourth in the triple jump at 39-5.25.

For the Leland boys, senior Nathaniel Polussa had a big day to help the Chargers get a team fifth. Polussa won the triple jump at 42.2.25 and was fourth in both the long jump at 20-9 and the high jump at 6-0.

Freshman Haico Kaashoek was third in the 3,200 in 10:18.69, Matt Dickson was third in the 100 in 11.65 and seventh in the 200 in 23.63, Matt Vera was fourth in the 1,600 in 4:42.97 and sixth in the 800 in 2:05.88, Michael Santini was fourth in the shot put at 40-11.25 and Eric Chu was fourth in the triple jump at 39-5.25 and sixth in the long jump at 19-2 with teammate Zach Hill eighth at 18-8.

Nelms starred for the Leland girls with the three individual wins. She took the 100 hurdles in 15.62 with Kikita Fkiaras second in 19.98, she won the 100 in 12.95 and she was first in the 300 hurdles in 45.38 with Fkiaras third in 47.93. Fkiaras was also third in the high jump at 4-10.

Barnett dominated the longer runs with a win the 1,600 in 5:15.22, a first in the 3,200 in 11:51.03 and a second in the 800 in 2:21.58.

Junior Lauren Chin was second in the long jump at 16-7, second in the triple jump at 34-9 with soph Michelle Hsieh seventh at 31-0 and fourth in the high jump at 4-10.

Sophomore Claudia Barnett was second in the 3,200 in 11:55.66 with freshman Emily Childress sixth in 12:40.83, and she was fifth in the 1,600 in 5:26.04 with freshman Ashleigh Brendlen eighth in 6:01.35,

Junior Elizabeth Yee was sixth in the 400 in 1:04.48, soph Simone Spenner was seventh in the 800 in 2:34.12 and junior Alyssa Rodriguez was sixth in the discus at 75-4.

The Leland girls also won the 4x400 relay in 4:06.96.

Pioneer sophomore Kira Rienecker was a league champ at the finals, winning the long jump at 17-4.5 with senior Elizabeth Allieu fourth at 15-11.5 and freshman Angie Regua eighth at 15-1.

Junior Toni Sarge raced to a win in the 800 in 2:21.53 and was second in the 1,600 in 5:21.59.

Allieu was third in the triple jump at 32-7, Katelyn Rebozzi was fifth in the 200 in 27.83, Marisa Sarabia was fifth in the 100 in 14.27, Rienecker was fifth in the 300 hurdles in 49.15 and eighth in the 100 hurdles in 19.6, Cassie Matos was seventh in the 100 hurdles in 18.62 and eighth in the 300 hurdles in 54.37 and Catherine Adams was eighth in the discus at 76-1.

Over at the Mt. Hamilton Division finals, the Leigh girls raced to a second-place finish and the Leigh boys were sixth overall.

Sophomore Jordan Diaz romped to three wins for the Leigh girls. Diaz was first in the 1,600 in 5:11.38 with soph Melissa Hopper fourth in 5:35.09 and freshman Michelle Hopper sixth in 5:38.73, she was first in the 800 in 2:21.30 with Michelle Hopper fourth and Melissa Hopper seventh

Junior Alena Roth was third in the 200 in 25.89 and fifth in the 100 in 12.5 with junior Kelsey Holtzinger seventh in 12.88; junior Alyssa Sialaris was second in the high jump at 4-10, second in the shot put at 37-9 and second in the discus at 119-1.5 with soph Symone Evans fourth. Evans was also fourth in the triple jump at 34-5.75 with Holtzinger seventh.

Holtzinger added a third in the long jump at 16-11.5 with freshman Nicole Sialaris eighth at 14-9.5.

Alex Ellinwood was a big winner for the Leigh boys. The senior won the 100 in 11.01 and the 200 in 22.34.

Senior Rob Pappas was second in the high jump at 6-0, junior Vince DiPiero was fourth in the long jump at 20-6.75 and junior Jamoi David was fourth in the 300 hurdles in 43.09.
